If a former (or current) FIRST team does not win an X-Prize in the next few years I'd be surprised. Check out this link. The people working on this problem are a bit older than FIRST teams but they're doing almost exactly the same things our teams do.
They're presented with an unstructured problem, work as a team to prototype and test multiple solutions, then prove it out in a competitive format... all to deal with one of our really big problems.
FIRST really is the competition where everyone can "go pro."
